| Panorama Hockey Club is the culmination, and coming together, of three West Rand hockey clubs, each with long, proud histories and traditions of their own. Florida Hockey Club played from Trezona Park, Rand Leases played from the Rand Leases Club on Main Reef Road and Roodepoort Hockey Club resided at Voortrekker Park. In the early days there was an intense derby rivalry amongst the three clubs and these derby days had a real “Manchester City vs Manchester United” feel about them. The games were hard-fought and the result really mattered, but essentially they were family days out and the after match hospitality at the respective clubs was memorable – many good, life-long friendships were formed amongst many of the “enemy”. |
| As the player base started to dwindle, Florida and Rand Leases amalgamated to form Florida Leases, and a few years later the decision was taken to bring Roodepoort Hockey Club in as well. The club continued to play in the name of Florida Leases from the Leases ground, which boasted great fields, tennis, bowls and pub facilities. The three clubs had a lot of success over their years of existence, with spells in the premier league – rubbing shoulders with hockey’s elite. The West Rand has been renowned for producing outstanding hockey players with many of the provincial representatives coming from one of these three clubs, which were a breeding ground for many big families/names. |
| In 2003, circumstance forced us to evacuate our beloved premises at Rand Leases and find a new venue. We were all very sad to leave that faithful old ground which housed many, many memories. We were, however, welcomed with open arms by the existing Panorama Sports Club. It took us a few years to let go of our Green, Red and Black colours, our feather, and our motto (“arte non impetu”); but we have now become fully integrated members of Panorama Sports Club. Panorama Hockey Club encompasses many of the old traditions that have come with our rich history, but we have also started to formulate many of our own. Our biggest challenge is building our young player base and convincing youngsters, and parents, that playing sport is an essential part of growing up in this “techno age”. We encourage all enthusiastic youths to come down and be a part of this fantastic Panorama Family – “the hockey is great, but the friendships are priceless.” |
