Karate Do is a fascinating art whose techniques and philosophies are designed for people of all ages and abilities to enjoy. It combines the ancient teachings of wise eastern masters with the ever changing face of western teaching methods. These elements were brought together to form an art that epitomizes the combination of self defense, self expression and a strong moral grounding. Though deeply rooted in the philosophy of holistic improvement, karate carries no religious connotations and can therefore be adapted to fit the needs of everyone.
Karate Do, though perceived to be of Japanese origin, was originally founded in the midst of the tiny Ryu Kyu Islands of Okinawa. It can be directly translated as “The Way of the Empty Hand”. This simply means that it does not involve the use of weapons in addition to the body and limbs. Many styles or schools of Karate have evolved over the years as different trains of thought brought about many adaptations. Each school has its own unique name and brand. Our brand however is known as Goju Ryu Karate Do.
Founded by a man named Chojun Miyagi, Goju Ryu Karate Do described very basically, is a close range system of self defense characterized by circular blocks, kicks to lower body targets, breathing, joint manipulations and dynamic muscle tension. Commonly known as “the Hard and Soft Way” Goju Ryu can be broken up into the following syllables “Go” meaning hard and “Ju” meaning soft and “Ryu” meaning school or path. This may seem quite contradictory, but the art makes use of both hard and soft techniques to achieve dominance over an opponent.
